Rhode Island — Gray skies hang low over Providence this morning, and the air feels damp and biting as temperatures hover near 33 degrees. Light snow showers may drift through at times today, but the real concern builds by late Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning for southeastern Massachusetts and much of Rhode Island, including Providence, Warwick and Newport. Total snow accumulations between 10 and 17 inches are possible. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph. Visibility may fall below a quarter mile in blowing snow.
Snow chances increase after 4 p.m. Sunday, then intensify Sunday night. Heavy snow could fall at rates high enough to quickly cover I-95, Route 6 and Route 146. Northerly winds strengthen late Sunday night, with gusts approaching 48 mph Monday. Expect drifting snow and near-blizzard conditions at times.
Plan ahead now. Charge devices. Check generators. Avoid unnecessary travel Monday, especially during the morning commute. Melting during daylight hours followed by refreezing could create flash freezing on untreated roads.
Snow likely lingers into Monday night before tapering Tuesday under clearing skies and a high near 32. Midweek stays cold, with another chance of mixed rain and snow Wednesday as temperatures hover in the 30s.
Looking toward the 6–10 day outlook, signs point to moderating temperatures and hints of early spring warmth by late next week. For now, winter still holds firm.
