New York, New York – The New York City metro area could see near-zero visibility by the Sunday morning commute as a blizzard unloads up to 18 inches of snow with wind gusts reaching 55 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Blizzard Warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday for New York City, Long Island, southern Westchester and southern Connecticut. Snow will develop Sunday morning, but the most intense conditions are expected Sunday night into Monday, when winds strengthen and visibility drops below a quarter mile in blowing snow.

Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island will likely face snow-covered streets and limited travel. The Long Island Expressway, Belt Parkway and I-95 through Westchester and coastal Connecticut could become impassable during peak snowfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hour. On Long Island, both Nassau and Suffolk counties may see significant drifting, especially on exposed roadways.

Strong winds combined with heavy snow could down tree limbs and power lines, leading to scattered outages. Transit disruptions are possible across the MTA system and Metro-North. Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel, charge devices and prepare emergency supplies.

Conditions will steadily worsen after sunrise Sunday and remain dangerous through the Monday evening commute. Additional advisories may follow as the storm intensifies.
