Corpus Christi, Texas – Any spark could turn into a fast-moving wildfire within minutes Saturday as humidity drops as low as 10 percent and north winds gust to 30 mph across South and South Central Texas.
According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi and Austin/San Antonio, Red Flag Warnings are in effect from late Saturday morning through 9 p.m. for a wide stretch of the state. In Brush Country and the northern Coastal Plains, including La Salle, McMullen, Live Oak, Bee, Goliad, Webb, Duval and Jim Wells counties, the warning runs from noon to 9 p.m. Farther north and west, including San Antonio, Austin, New Braunfels, Kerrville and Del Rio, the warning begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 9 p.m.
Forecasters expect north winds between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. Relative humidity could fall to 10 percent in parts of South Central Texas and near 15 percent closer to the coast. Afternoon temperatures may climb into the low 80s, further drying vegetation.
These conditions support rapid fire growth and extreme fire behavior. Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning and urge residents to avoid activities that could create sparks, including welding or parking vehicles on dry grass.
Fire crews will remain on heightened alert through Saturday evening. Additional restrictions or extensions are possible if dry, breezy conditions persist into Sunday.
