Dodge City, Kansas – Snow is coating highways across western Kansas tonight, and drivers in Hays and surrounding communities could encounter slick pavement through 6 a.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Ellis, Rush, Ness and Trego counties until 6 a.m. Forecasters expect total snowfall up to 2 inches, enough to create hazardous travel on untreated roads and rural highways.
Light to occasionally moderate snow continues near Wakeeney, Ness City, La Crosse and Pfeifer, where elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses will become slippery first. Even minor accumulation can reduce traction quickly, especially during the overnight hours when temperatures hover near freezing.
The Kansas Department of Transportation urges motorists to slow down, increase following distance and avoid sudden lane changes. If you must travel before sunrise Saturday, check updated road conditions by calling 511 and allow extra time for your commute.
Snowfall should taper off toward daybreak, but patchy icy spots may linger past 6 a.m., particularly on secondary roads and less-traveled county routes. Crews will continue monitoring conditions into Saturday morning, and any new advisories will be issued if needed.
