Eureka, California – Drivers crossing Scott Mountain on Highway 3 will face near-whiteout conditions starting at 10 p.m. Saturday as heavy snow and 55 mph wind gusts hammer elevations above 4,500 feet in Northern Trinity County.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday until 4 p.m. Sunday for higher elevations. Forecasters expect up to 12 inches of snow, with strong ridge-top winds capable of snapping tree limbs and downing power lines.
Travel over Scott Mountain could become very difficult overnight Saturday and through much of Sunday. Blowing snow may sharply reduce visibility, and chain controls are likely. Caltrans could temporarily close stretches of Highway 3 if snowfall rates intensify or debris blocks the roadway.
Communities in higher terrain areas of Northern Trinity should prepare for scattered power outages as winds peak late Saturday night into Sunday morning. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and charge electronic devices before conditions deteriorate.
If travel is unavoidable, carry chains, extra food, water and a flashlight. Road conditions are available by dialing 511. Snow and wind impacts will ease after 4 p.m. Sunday, but slick roads may linger into Sunday evening, and additional advisories could follow if the system slows.
