Marquette, Michigan – Drivers across Upper Michigan have just hours before another wave of lake-effect snow makes early Saturday travel slick and slow, especially along exposed stretches of U.S. 41 and M-26 in the Keweenaw Peninsula.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Keweenaw, Northern Houghton, and Baraga counties until 1 p.m. Saturday, with an additional 3 to 5 inches of snow expected. In Marquette County, a Winter Storm Warning continues until 1 a.m. Saturday, followed immediately by a Winter Weather Advisory through 1 p.m., bringing total additional snowfall of 2 to 4 inches.

Communities including Copper Harbor, Hancock, Houghton and L’Anse will see steady accumulation overnight, with snow-covered roads and reduced visibility at times. In Marquette and Gwinn, snowfall rates ease after 1 a.m., but light snow will continue into the morning, keeping secondary roads snow-packed.

Road commissions across the western Upper Peninsula are urging drivers to slow down and allow extra braking distance. If you must travel before 1 p.m. Saturday, keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle with water, food and a flashlight. Gusty winds along Lake Superior may also lead to isolated power outages.

Snow tapers gradually Saturday afternoon, but slick conditions could linger into the evening. Additional advisories may be issued if bands redevelop.
