Marquette, Michigan – Heavy snow continues to bury parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula tonight, with up to 10 inches expected in the Keweenaw Peninsula before conditions improve by 1 p.m. Saturday. Roads are rapidly becoming snow-covered, and travel could turn dangerous overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday for Keweenaw, Northern Houghton and Baraga counties. An additional 5 to 10 inches of snow is expected, adding to already accumulating totals and creating difficult travel along US-41 between Houghton, Hancock and Copper Harbor.

In Marquette County, a Winter Storm Warning continues until 1 a.m. Saturday, followed by a Winter Weather Advisory through 1 p.m. Forecasters expect another 1 to 3 inches before 1 a.m., with total accumulations reaching 2 to 4 inches overnight. The heaviest snowfall will focus on higher terrain near Gwinn and south of Marquette, where dense, wet snow may weigh down tree limbs and power lines.

Snow-covered highways and secondary roads across Baraga and L’Anse will remain slick through the Saturday morning drive. Drivers should allow extra time, reduce speeds and carry emergency supplies, including food, water and flashlights.

Warnings remain in place through Saturday afternoon, and additional updates may be issued if snowfall rates increase.
