Burlington, Vermont – Snow is falling fast across northern New York and Vermont this afternoon, with snowfall rates topping 1 inch per hour and roads quickly turning snow-covered ahead of the evening commute. Drivers have a narrowing window before conditions deteriorate further through 10 a.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday for much of northern Vermont and parts of northern New York, including Franklin and St. Lawrence counties. Forecasters expect total snow accumulations between 4 and 7 inches, with the heaviest bursts occurring this afternoon and evening.

Communities from Burlington and St. Albans to Middlebury, Rutland and Stowe will see steady accumulation through the night. In New York, Malone, Potsdam, Gouverneur and Ogdensburg are also in the advisory zone. Snowfall rates exceeding 1 inch per hour may significantly reduce visibility and quickly coat untreated roads. Parts of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom could see a delayed onset before heavier snow arrives later this evening.

Travel could become very difficult on Interstate 89, U.S. Route 7 and secondary highways, especially during peak commute hours. Officials urge motorists to slow down and check road conditions at 511NY.org or NewEngland511.org before departing.

Snow tapers toward midmorning Saturday, but slick roads may linger beyond the advisory period.
