Wilmington, Delaware – Snow could begin piling up across Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore by midafternoon Sunday, with more than 5 inches possible before the system exits Monday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon for New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties in Delaware, along with Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot and Caroline counties in Maryland. Forecasters say heavy snow could develop Sunday afternoon, with gusts up to 35 mph creating blowing and drifting snow Sunday night into early Monday.

Road conditions may deteriorate quickly along I-95 near Wilmington, Route 1 through Dover, and coastal routes near Rehoboth Beach as snowfall intensifies late Sunday. Communities including Georgetown, Easton, Centreville and Denton could see snow-covered roads and reduced visibility during heavier bands. Gusty winds may also bring down isolated tree limbs, increasing the risk of scattered power outages.

The Monday morning and evening commutes face the highest disruption risk, particularly on untreated secondary roads and bridges. Drivers should prepare for extended travel times, avoid sudden braking, and ensure vehicles are stocked with emergency supplies.

Snow is expected to taper Monday afternoon, but additional advisories or warnings could follow if snowfall totals trend higher.
