Monroe, NC – A driver was arrested after a 16-mile high-speed chase that exceeded 100 mph on Highway 74.

According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, a SAFE Unit deputy attempted to stop a vehicle near North Camden Street after observing the driver failing to maintain lane control. When the deputy activated blue lights, authorities said the vehicle fled.

Investigators said the driver made a U-turn, drove through a grass median to re-enter Highway 74, and continued into Anson County. During the pursuit, the driver allegedly exceeded 100 mph, crossed left of center multiple times, and threw items from the vehicle.

Deputies with the Anson County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the pursuit and successfully deployed stop sticks, bringing the vehicle to a stop without further incident.

The driver was identified as Devonte Robinson. Authorities said he showed clear signs of impairment and was taken into custody and transported to the Union County Detention Center.

Officials said Robinson initially received no bond due to prior charges. At a video arraignment, his bond was amended to $50,000. He remains in custody.

Sheriff Eddie Cathey praised deputies for their handling of the incident and thanked Anson County authorities for their assistance.

High-speed pursuits on major commuter corridors like Highway 74 can disrupt travel and pose risks to nearby drivers, including students and young workers traveling between counties.

The investigation remains ongoing.
