Des Moines, Iowa – Below-average temperatures will keep highs in the lower 20s through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, temperatures over the next few days are expected to remain well below seasonal averages. Highs Saturday are forecast between 23 and 33 degrees, followed by 20 to 25 degrees on Sunday.
Wind chills are expected to fall into the single digits at times, particularly during the morning and evening hours when winds combine with cold air temperatures.
Travel along I-80, I-35, and I-235 in the Des Moines metro could feel significantly colder for stranded motorists or those traveling during early morning hours. While no winter storm impacts are expected, exposed skin may experience rapid heat loss in persistent winds.
Forecasters note that conditions will gradually improve early next week. A warming trend is expected to begin Tuesday, with highs climbing back above average, especially in areas with limited snow cover.
The colder temperatures may impact outdoor activities, weekend events, and early-morning travel across central Iowa.
Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, limit prolonged outdoor exposure, and ensure pets and vulnerable neighbors have adequate warmth.
The timing may be especially relevant for students waiting at bus stops and commuters traveling along I-80 and I-35 during peak hours.
Additional forecast updates will be issued as temperatures moderate heading into next week.
