Corpus Christi, Texas – Friday – A Red Flag Warning and Gale Watch signal elevated fire and marine dangers this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi, relative humidity values as low as 15% combined with gusty winds behind a cold front will create critical fire weather conditions Saturday afternoon and evening.

The Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday for Webb, LaSalle, Duval, McMullen, Jim Wells, Live Oak, Bee, and Goliad counties.

Forecasters say north winds of 15 to 20 mph, gusting up to 30 mph, will combine with very dry air to increase the risk of rapid fire spread. Officials urge residents to avoid open flames or sparks, keep vehicles off dry grass, and properly dispose of cigarettes.

Travel along I-37, US-59, US-77, and US-281 could be impacted by reduced visibility if grass fires develop near roadways.

In addition, a Gale Watch is in effect Saturday evening through Sunday morning for the coastal waters from Baffin Bay to the Matagorda Shipping Channel, including all bays and waterways.

Marine forecasts call for north winds of 20 to 30 knots with gusts up to 35 knots and seas building to 7 to 10 feet. Hazardous conditions are possible for small craft, particularly inexperienced operators.

The timing may be especially relevant for ranch workers, boaters, and weekend travelers across South Texas.

Officials encourage residents and mariners to monitor updated statements as conditions evolve behind the advancing cold front.
