Baltimore, Md. – Heavy snow could begin as early as Sunday morning, with the most intense snowfall arriving late Sunday afternoon and continuing Overnight into early Monday, threatening the Monday morning commute across central and northern Maryland.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning for Frederick, Carroll, Northern Baltimore, Cecil, Southern Baltimore, and Harford counties, as well as Northwest Montgomery and Northwest Howard counties in Maryland and Western Loudoun County in Virginia.
Total snow accumulations of 5 inches or more are possible, with the heaviest rates expected late Sunday afternoon through daybreak Monday. Roads including Interstate 95, Interstate 70, Interstate 83 and U.S. Route 15 could become snow-covered and slick Sunday night. Visibility may drop below one-half mile during heavier bands.
Travel conditions could deteriorate rapidly after sunset Sunday.
The Maryland Department of Transportation and Virginia Department of Transportation are expected to pre-treat major highways before the evening push. Snowfall during peak overnight hours could create widespread travel impacts before sunrise Monday, especially on bridges and elevated roadways.
Residents should complete essential travel before late Sunday evening and monitor local road conditions. Colder air behind the system may keep untreated roads icy into midday Monday.
The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through Monday morning.
