Ligonier, Pennsylvania – An extended period of mountain snow could begin late Saturday night, with more than 6 inches favored across the higher elevations before the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Saturday night through late Monday night for the higher elevations of Westmoreland and Fayette counties in Pennsylvania, and for Preston and Tucker counties in West Virginia. Snowfall exceeding 6 inches is most likely from Sunday through Monday, especially along ridgetops.
Travel could become very difficult.
Elevated stretches of Route 30 near Ligonier, Route 40 in Fayette County, and Interstate 68 near Bruceton Mills and Hazelton may become snow-covered by early Monday. Snow is expected to accumulate more efficiently on grassy and elevated surfaces at first, but forecasters indicate roads and sidewalks are more likely to turn slick Sunday night.
Residents in Donegal, Ohiopyle, Kingwood, Davis, and Canaan Valley should prepare for changing road conditions and allow extra travel time. PennDOT and the West Virginia Division of Highways are expected to monitor high-elevation corridors closely.
Snow may continue in waves through late Monday night before tapering. The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through late Monday night as snowfall totals and elevation impacts are refined.
