Wilmington, Delaware – Heavy snow could begin Sunday afternoon across Delaware and northeast Maryland, with more than 5 inches possible before the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon for New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties in Delaware, along with Kent, Queen Annes, Talbot, and Caroline counties in Maryland. Snowfall totals exceeding 5 inches are possible, with wind gusts up to 35 mph reducing visibility and drifting snow onto roadways.

Travel could become very difficult.

Major routes including Interstate 95 near Wilmington, Route 1 through Dover, and coastal roads near Rehoboth Beach could see snow-covered lanes and reduced visibility by late Sunday night. Gusty winds may also impact the Chesapeake Bay Bridge corridor near Centreville and Chestertown.

Residents should review travel plans now and prepare vehicles for winter driving before Sunday afternoon. Road crews across DelDOT and Maryland State Highway Administration districts will monitor conditions as snowfall develops.

Snow may continue into Monday afternoon before tapering, with blowing snow lingering in open areas. The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon as forecasters refine expected totals.
