Marquette, Michigan – Heavy snow is creating difficult travel across Upper Michigan this afternoon, with the most intense bands expected to impact the Friday evening commute and persist overnight in several counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Marquette County until 1 a.m. EST Saturday, followed by a Winter Weather Advisory through 1 p.m. EST Saturday. Additional snowfall of 2 to 6 inches is expected, with up to 8 inches possible in northwest portions of the county. Snowfall rates will reduce visibility and quickly cover roadways, especially along M-28 and US-41.
Travel could be very difficult.
In Ontonagon and southern Houghton counties, 2 to 7 inches of additional snow — with isolated totals near 9 inches in higher terrain — will continue through 1 p.m. EST Saturday. Iron and Dickinson counties can expect 3 to 7 inches by noon CST Saturday after a Winter Storm Warning was downgraded to an advisory. Menominee, Alger, and Delta counties are also under advisories through early Saturday afternoon.
Eastern counties including Luce and Schoolcraft remain under advisory until 7 p.m. EST this evening, with up to 1 inch of wet snow affecting road conditions during the evening commute.
Drivers should slow down now and allow extra stopping distance. MDOT reports snow-covered stretches on US-2 and M-35, with plows active.
Light snow will taper west to east by Saturday afternoon, but colder air may refreeze untreated surfaces overnight. Winter weather advisories and warnings remain in effect through Saturday midday depending on location.
