Pueblo, Colorado – Heavy snow and 50 mph wind gusts are making travel hazardous over Wolf Creek Pass and Cumbres Pass through 11 p.m. MST tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Eastern San Juan Mountains above 10,000 feet, where 6 to 12 inches of snow is expected, with locally higher totals on south- and southwest-facing slopes.
Blowing snow will sharply reduce visibility on exposed stretches of U.S. Highway 160 at Wolf Creek Pass and along Colorado Highway 17 near Cumbres Pass. Gusts up to 50 mph will create drifting and rapidly changing road conditions through the evening.
Travel could become dangerous before sunset.
High-elevation routes may see periods of near-whiteout conditions as winds intensify this afternoon. CDOT warns that traction laws or temporary closures are possible if snowfall rates increase.
Drivers should delay non-essential travel and check COtrip.org or call 511 for real-time road conditions before heading into the mountains.
Snow tapers late tonight, but slick and snow-packed roads will likely persist into early Saturday. The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. MST this evening.
