Amarillo, Texas – Wind gusts up to 55 mph and critical fire weather conditions will intensify across the western Texas Panhandle from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, creating dangerous crosswinds on I-40 and a heightened wildfire risk along US-87.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, very dry air combined with strengthening southwest winds will produce sustained speeds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching 50 to 55 mph in the far western Panhandle, including Dalhart and Boise City. Central areas such as Amarillo and Borger can expect gusts between 35 and 45 mph through late afternoon.
Any spark could spread rapidly.
Critical Fire Weather conditions are in effect during peak heating hours, especially west of Highway 287. Relative humidity values will drop sharply, allowing fires to ignite and spread quickly in open grassland areas. Law enforcement and local fire agencies urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and activities that could create sparks.
High-profile vehicles traveling on I-40, US-287, and US-385 may encounter sudden crosswinds, particularly on open stretches between Amarillo and Vega. Blowing dust could briefly reduce visibility in exposed rural areas.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items and postpone any activities involving open flames.
Winds will gradually diminish after sunset Friday, bringing a temporary break from elevated fire danger this weekend. Warmer, calmer conditions are expected Saturday and Sunday, with no significant precipitation forecast. Critical Fire Weather conditions remain in effect through 7 p.m. Friday across much of the western Panhandle.
