Hastings, Nebraska – Light snow will spread across south-central Nebraska beginning this afternoon and continue overnight, with up to 1.5 inches creating slick stretches on US-6 and US-281 before sunrise Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, snow will enter western portions of the coverage area early this afternoon and expand eastward through the evening. Most communities will receive around 1 inch or less, though southwestern counties could see localized totals slightly above 1 inch by the time snow ends near sunrise Saturday.
Road conditions may become slick after sunset.
Interstate 80 from Kearney to Grand Island and US-34 through Hastings may see light accumulations on bridges and untreated secondary roads overnight as temperatures remain below freezing. Winds are expected to stay under 15 mph, limiting blowing or drifting snow and keeping visibility reductions minor.
The Nebraska Department of Transportation will monitor highway conditions, but widespread closures are not anticipated due to the light nature of this event. Even so, patchy snow-covered pavement may develop during the late-night hours.
Drivers heading out early Saturday should slow down on elevated roadways and allow extra stopping distance.
Snow tapers off from west to east around or shortly after sunrise Saturday, with dry conditions returning for the remainder of the weekend. Temperatures will remain cold through Sunday before moderating early next week. No winter storm warnings are in effect, though minor travel impacts may persist into mid-morning Saturday.
