North Carolina’s Crystal Coast is wrapped in thick, salty fog this morning, blurring headlights and softening the shoreline in Newport. Visibility has dropped to around half a mile at times near Beaufort Smith Field, and drivers along U.S. 70 and N.C. 24 are easing off the gas.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, areas of dense fog will impact the morning commute, especially near the immediate coast and larger bodies of water. Visibility could fall to one mile or less at times. Motorists should use low-beam headlights and leave extra space between vehicles.

Allow extra travel time through late morning.

Skies remain mostly cloudy today with a high near 70 degrees. A stray shower is possible this afternoon, with southwest winds 8 to 14 mph and gusts up to 22 mph. Fog may redevelop in patches before noon where moisture lingers.

Rain chances increase Saturday, mainly after midmorning, with highs near 62. Periods of rain continue Saturday night into Sunday, when highs cool to the mid-50s. Northeasterly winds could gust above 20 mph near the coast.

Colder air arrives Sunday night.

A rain–snow mix is possible late Sunday night into early Monday as temperatures fall toward 30 degrees. Little accumulation is expected, but brief slick spots cannot be ruled out inland. Monday turns partly sunny with highs in the upper 40s.

By Tuesday, sunshine returns with highs near 47. Midweek temperatures rebound into the upper 50s, and longer-range trends point toward above-normal readings late next week, signaling early spring warmth building across eastern North Carolina.
