Omaha, Nebraska – Drivers across eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa face slick highways early Friday as light snow continues to fall through 6 a.m., creating icy spots before the morning commute ramps up.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Friday for Douglas, Lancaster, Sarpy and surrounding counties in Nebraska, along with Pottawattamie and Mills counties in Iowa. Additional snowfall up to 1 inch is expected before precipitation tapers off.
Even minor accumulations are creating slippery stretches along Interstate 80 between Lincoln and Omaha, Interstate 29 near Council Bluffs and U.S. 75 through Bellevue and Plattsmouth. Bridges and overpasses are especially vulnerable to icing as pavement temperatures remain below freezing. Local law enforcement reports scattered slick spots across Dodge, Saunders and Washington counties.
Motorists heading out before sunrise should reduce speed, increase following distance and allow extra time. Check Nebraska 511 or Iowa 511 for real-time road updates.
Snow should wind down toward daybreak, but icy patches may linger into the early commute. Crews will continue treatment operations, and additional travel advisories remain possible if refreezing develops.
