Albany, NY – Snow, sleet, and freezing rain will overspread eastern New York by midday Friday, creating hazardous travel on Interstate 87 and Interstate 90 before the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a wintry mix will move from southwest to northeast beginning late Thursday night and intensify through Friday afternoon. Areas across the Adirondacks and southern Vermont could receive 4 to 8 inches of snow, while lower elevations around Albany, Troy, and Schenectady may see up to 4 inches of snow and as much as 0.25 inches of ice through early Saturday. Western New England, including Pittsfield and North Adams, faces similar icing totals.

Ice accumulation up to a quarter inch can down branches.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly after 3 p.m. Friday. Slippery stretches are likely along the Adirondack Northway (I-87), I-787 near downtown Albany, and the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90). Visibility may drop below one mile during heavier bursts of snow, especially north of Saratoga Springs and Glens Falls.

The highest impact window runs from late Friday afternoon through midnight Saturday, with the Friday evening commute most affected. School districts and local emergency managers are monitoring for potential delays or cancellations Saturday morning if icing lingers.

Residents should limit nonessential travel Friday evening and check road conditions before heading out.

Precipitation tapers to lighter snow or drizzle early Saturday, but untreated roads may remain slick into Saturday morning. Additional system details for late weekend remain under review. Winter weather advisories and related alerts remain in effect across eastern New York and western New England through Saturday.
