Marquette, Michigan – Heavy snow and ice will begin around 1 a.m. Friday, creating hazardous road conditions across Baraga and Marquette counties before the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST Friday. Snow totals will range between 3 and 7 inches, with ice accumulations around 0.10 inches, mainly south and east of the city of Marquette.

Roads may turn slick before sunrise.

Heavy, wet snow will fall across Marquette, Gwinn, and L’Anse, while a glaze of ice could coat elevated surfaces and untreated pavement. U.S. Highway 41 and M-28 are likely to see reduced traction and slower travel speeds through midday. The combination of snow weight and light ice could also trigger scattered power outages, especially in areas south and east of Marquette.

Both the morning and evening commutes will be affected.

Residents should delay nonessential travel and keep emergency supplies in vehicles, including food, water, and a flashlight. Prepare now for possible power interruptions.

Precipitation will taper Friday evening, but colder air Friday night could refreeze slush on area roads. The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. EST Friday.
