Newton, Illinois – A Tornado Warning is in effect for northeastern Jasper County until 7:30 p.m. CST Thursday, with a radar-indicated storm capable of producing a tornado moving toward Newton at 30 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the severe thunderstorm was located near Newton at 6:46 p.m. and showed clear rotation on radar. The storm is capable of producing a tornado and quarter-size hail measuring 1.00 inch in diameter.

Flying debris poses a serious risk to anyone outside, especially along Illinois Route 33 and nearby county roads. Mobile homes in and around Newton face a heightened damage threat, and hail could dent vehicles and shatter windows within minutes.
Tree damage is likely as the storm tracks northeast.
Residents should move immediately to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoid windows. Those in vehicles or mobile homes should seek substantial shelter right away.
The storm will move out of the warned area by 7:30 p.m. CST if it maintains its current speed. The Tornado Warning remains in effect for northeastern Jasper County until 7:30 p.m. CST Thursday.
