Indianapolis, Indiana – A Tornado Watch remains in effect across 24 central and southern Indiana counties until 9 p.m. EST Thursday, putting the Indianapolis metro and surrounding communities at risk for damaging winds and possible tornadoes during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, Tornado Watch 10 includes Marion, Hendricks, Johnson, Morgan, Hancock, Shelby, Monroe, Vigo and 16 other counties stretching from Terre Haute to Bloomington and Columbus. The watch signals conditions are favorable for tornado development and severe thunderstorms capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and isolated tornadoes before 9 p.m.

Road conditions may deteriorate quickly under heavier cells.

Interstates I-65, I-70, I-69 and I-465 could see sudden visibility drops and debris if storms intensify. Indianapolis International Airport and regional airports in Bloomington and Terre Haute may also experience temporary ground delays if warnings are issued.

Emergency managers urge residents in cities including Indianapolis, Greenwood, Bloomington and Terre Haute to monitor alerts and be prepared to move indoors immediately if a warning is issued.

Have multiple ways to receive warnings now.

Storm activity is expected to weaken after 9 p.m., but additional showers may linger overnight. The Tornado Watch remains in effect for all listed counties until 9 p.m. EST Thursday.
