Oneonta, New York – Freezing rain and light snow will begin around 6 a.m. Friday, coating roads across the Catskills and Mohawk Valley and creating hazardous travel through 1 a.m. EST Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Delaware, Otsego, Southern Oneida, and Sullivan counties. Snow accumulations will reach up to 1 inch, with ice totals around 0.20 inches. The highest peaks of the Catskills could see up to 0.25 inches of ice.
Ice will accumulate quickly on untreated pavement.
Interstate 88, Route 17, and Route 28 near Oneonta, Delhi, Monticello, Utica, and Rome may become slick during both the morning and evening commutes. Elevated roads and rural hilltops face the greatest icing risk, especially before midday and again after sunset as temperatures hover near freezing.
Even a thin glaze can down tree limbs.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check 511NY for updated road conditions before traveling. Prepare for isolated power outages in higher elevations where ice accretion is greatest.
Mixed precipitation will taper late Friday night. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. EST Saturday.
