Eureka, California – Temperatures will plunge to 27 degrees along parts of the North Coast by daybreak Friday, creating a freeze threat that could impact early drivers on US-101 and expose anyone outdoors to dangerous wind chills before 9 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect from 12 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday for coastal communities and interior valleys across northwest California. Coastal lows are expected to dip as low as 27 degrees, while interior valleys could fall between 15 and 25 degrees under clear skies and light winds.

Along the US-101 corridor from Crescent City through Eureka and south toward Fortuna, temperatures hovering in the upper 20s to near 30 degrees may allow frost and isolated icy patches to form on bridges and overpasses during the early morning commute. Inland areas including Ukiah and valleys east of Highway 101 face the coldest readings, increasing the risk of frozen pipes and crop damage.

Forecasters warn that frostbite and hypothermia can occur if unprotected skin is exposed for extended periods, especially in colder interior valleys where wind chills may feel even lower.

Residents should cover sensitive plants, insulate outdoor plumbing and bring pets indoors overnight. Check on elderly neighbors and ensure safe heating practices, avoiding generators or grills inside enclosed spaces.

Temperatures will rebound after 9 a.m. Friday, but another cold night is possible if skies remain clear. Additional advisories may be issued if sub-freezing conditions persist into the weekend.
