Monterey, California – Snow is piling up across the higher peaks of the Central Coast this afternoon, with 2 to 5 inches expected above 3,500 feet and wind gusts up to 50 mph creating near whiteout conditions on exposed ridges through 7 a.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Santa Lucia Mountains, Los Padres National Forest, interior Monterey County, San Benito County and areas near Pinnacles National Park. While elevations below 3,000 feet may see little to no accumulation, higher terrain will turn slick quickly as bursts of heavier snow reduce visibility.
Mountain roads through the Santa Lucia Range and the Cholame Hills could become snow-covered overnight, especially on winding stretches with limited treatment access. Gusty winds above 2,000 feet increase the risk of downed tree limbs and isolated power outages in rural communities.
Hikers and campers should prepare for rapidly changing conditions and avoid exposed summits where visibility may drop sharply. Drivers are urged to slow down and use extra caution on mountain routes. Snow showers will taper toward daybreak Friday, but icy patches may linger into the morning hours. Additional updates are possible if snowfall intensifies overnight.
