Phoenix, Arizona – Wind gusts up to 60 mph are set to hammer the southwest corner of Imperial County through 5 a.m. Friday, creating dangerous crosswinds for drivers along exposed desert highways.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 5 a.m. PST Friday for areas near Mountain Spring. West winds will range from 20 to 30 mph, with peak gusts reaching 60 mph overnight.
The strongest winds are expected along elevated and open stretches of roadway, where crosswinds could push high-profile vehicles out of their lanes. Drivers on Interstate 8 near Mountain Spring should prepare for sudden gusts capable of making steering difficult, especially for tractor-trailers, RVs and box trucks.
Loose outdoor objects may become airborne, and isolated blowing dust could briefly reduce visibility in desert corridors.
Officials urge motorists to delay non-essential travel overnight if possible. If travel is necessary, reduce speed, keep both hands firmly on the wheel and maintain extra distance between vehicles.
The advisory remains active until 5 a.m. Friday, with conditions expected to gradually improve toward sunrise.
