Louisville, Kentucky – Central Kentucky residents have just hours to prepare as a Tornado Watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday, keeping more than 10 counties under the threat of rotating storms capable of producing tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, Tornado Watch 10 has been extended to include Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, Garrard, Harrison, Jessamine, Madison, Nicholas, Scott and Woodford counties through 9 p.m. EST. The watch means conditions are favorable for tornado development, along with damaging wind gusts and large hail.
The greatest concern centers on the Lexington metro area, including Fayette County, as well as Richmond, Georgetown, Winchester, Paris and Nicholasville. Storms moving through the region could quickly intensify, especially along and east of Interstate 75. Power outages and downed trees are possible if strong wind gusts develop.
Emergency officials urge residents to review shelter plans now. Identify a basement or interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows. Keep phones charged and enable wireless emergency alerts in case warnings are issued.
The watch remains active until 9 p.m., and additional warnings could be issued with little notice as storms track across central Kentucky this evening.
