Marquette, Michigan – Snow and a glaze of ice will coat roads in Dickinson County overnight, creating slick travel conditions before sunrise and lingering into Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight tonight until 6 p.m. CST Friday for Dickinson County, including Iron Mountain. Forecasters expect 3 to 5 inches of snow along with up to one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation. Mixed precipitation overnight will transition to all snow by Friday morning.
Light icing could develop first on bridges and overpasses along U.S. 2, U.S. 141, and M-95, making early travel hazardous. As temperatures fluctuate overnight, a brief period of sleet or freezing rain may create a thin glaze before steadier snowfall takes over. By mid-morning Friday, accumulating snow will continue to reduce visibility and cover untreated roads.
Both the morning and evening commutes could be affected as snowfall persists through the day. Road crews will treat main highways, but secondary and rural routes near Iron Mountain may remain slippery.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra braking distance, and prepare for changing road conditions. The advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Friday, with improving travel expected Friday night as precipitation tapers.
