La Crosse, Wisconsin – Snow will spread across northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and western Wisconsin this evening, coating highways before the Friday morning commute with up to 5 inches and gusty winds.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 8 p.m. tonight until 9 a.m. CST Friday for Floyd, Chickasaw, Howard, and Winneshiek counties in Iowa; Houston County in Minnesota; and La Crosse and Vernon counties in Wisconsin. Total snowfall between 2 and 5 inches is expected, with wind gusts up to 35 mph.
Snow will overspread Decorah, Cresco, Charles City, and New Hampton during the evening hours, then reach Caledonia, La Crosse, and Viroqua overnight. Gusty winds may blow snow across open stretches of Highway 52, U.S. 63, and Interstate 90, reducing visibility and creating slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Road crews will treat primary routes, but secondary roads may become snow-covered quickly after 10 p.m. Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra braking distance, and check 511ia.org, 511mn.org, or 511wi.gov before traveling.
The advisory expires at 9 a.m. Friday, though patchy blowing snow could linger through late morning as winds gradually weaken.
