Sacramento, California – Heavy snow and 50 mph wind gusts are slamming the Sierra foothills and northern mountains, forcing chain controls and triggering road closures ahead of the Thursday evening drive.
According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. PST. Areas above 2,000 to 3,000 feet could see up to 6 additional inches of snow, while elevations above 4,000 feet may pick up as much as 1 foot. Southwest winds will gust between 40 and 50 mph, creating blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.
Communities including Grass Valley, Paradise, Jackson, Quincy, Chester and Blue Canyon are seeing accumulating snow with snow levels hovering between 1,500 and 2,500 feet. On Interstate 80 near Blue Canyon and Highway 50 through the Sierra, Caltrans crews have implemented chain controls, and brief closures are possible if snowfall rates intensify. Mountain passes could see visibility drop below a quarter mile in heavier bands.
Travel is strongly discouraged above 3,000 feet unless absolutely necessary. Drivers should carry chains, extra food, water and blankets in case of delays. Check Caltrans QuickMap or dial 511 before departing. Snow and wind will gradually ease after 10 p.m., but slick roads and restrictions may linger into early Friday.
