Baraboo, Wisconsin – Snow will thicken after midnight, and roads across southwest Wisconsin could become snow-covered and nearly impassable before the Friday morning commute begins.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from midnight to noon Friday for Sauk, Iowa and Lafayette counties. Forecasters expect 4 to 8 inches of snow, with the highest totals likely in northwest portions of the warned area. Wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph will blow and drift snow, sharply reducing visibility and creating hazardous travel conditions.
The storm will intensify between midnight and 6 a.m., targeting key corridors across south-central and western Wisconsin. In Sauk County, including Baraboo, Reedsburg and Prairie du Sac, steady snowfall combined with gusty winds could cover highways such as U.S. 12 and Highway 33. Along Interstate 90 near Wisconsin Dells and toward the Iowa County line, blowing snow may create brief whiteout conditions. Communities in Iowa County, including Dodgeville and Mineral Point, and Lafayette County cities such as Darlington and Shullsburg, could see the higher-end snowfall totals.
Travel could become very difficult through late Friday morning. If you must head out, pack an emergency kit with water, food and a flashlight, and check Wisconsin 511 for updated road conditions before leaving.
Snow should taper toward midday Friday, but drifting and slick spots may linger into the afternoon. Warnings remain in effect until noon, and additional updates are possible overnight.
