Albany, New York – Heavy snow will begin falling across the southern Adirondacks and southern Vermont by 10 a.m. Friday, with snowfall rates reaching 1 inch per hour at times and creating hazardous travel before the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Friday until 1 p.m. EST Saturday for Northern Warren, Hamilton and Southeast Warren counties in New York, as well as Bennington and Windham counties in Vermont. Snow totals between 6 and 9 inches are expected, with a glaze up to one tenth of an inch of ice in areas that see freezing rain.
Communities including Glens Falls, North Creek, Warrensburg, Bennington and Brattleboro will likely see steady snow through Friday afternoon. Snowfall rates could reach 0.5 to 1 inch per hour Friday evening, quickly covering roads and reducing visibility. In southern Vermont and parts of southeast Warren County, sleet and freezing rain may create a thin layer of ice on bridges and untreated surfaces.
State transportation crews will treat major routes, but secondary roads may become snow-covered quickly. Drivers should allow extra time, carry emergency supplies and avoid unnecessary travel during heavier bursts Friday evening.
Snow and mixed precipitation taper Saturday afternoon, though slick spots may linger. Warnings remain in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday.
