Effingham, Illinois – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes could develop quickly across southern Illinois this afternoon, placing 14 counties under a Tornado Watch until 9 p.m. EST.

According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, Tornado Watch 10 includes Clay, Effingham, Wayne, White, Saline and Gallatin counties, along with Crawford, Edwards, Jasper, Lawrence, Richland, Hamilton, Hardin and Wabash counties. The watch remains in effect through mid-evening as atmospheric conditions support rotating storms.

Communities including Effingham, Mount Carmel, Fairfield, Harrisburg and Carmi sit within the watch area. Storms that form later this afternoon may produce isolated tornadoes, wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and hail large enough to damage vehicles and roofs. The threat is expected to increase during the late afternoon and could impact the evening commute.

Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts closely and identify a safe shelter location now. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building if a Tornado Warning is issued. Keep mobile devices charged and avoid unnecessary travel during strong storms.

The Tornado Watch remains active until 9 p.m. EST, and additional warnings could be issued with little notice as storms intensify.
