Steamboat Springs, Colorado – Snow will begin piling up above 9,000 feet in northwest Colorado by 5 a.m. Friday, creating hazardous travel over higher mountain routes before the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. until 11 p.m. Friday for the Elkhead and Park Mountains. Snow totals between 4 and 8 inches are expected at elevations above 9,000 feet, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph that could produce blowing snow and sudden drops in visibility.
Higher terrain near Columbine, Hahns Peak and Toponas will see the greatest impacts. Mountain roads and exposed ridgelines could become snow-packed by midmorning Friday, with drifting snow in open areas as winds increase through the afternoon. Travel over high passes in the region may slow significantly during both the morning and evening drive times.
The Colorado Department of Transportation advises motorists to prepare for winter driving conditions, especially at higher elevations. Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and check updated road conditions by calling 511 before heading out.
Snow is expected to taper late Friday night, but slick spots may linger into early Saturday at higher elevations. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall persists.
