Binghamton, NY – Roads across northern Oneida County could turn slick as early as 7 a.m. Friday, with snow and freezing rain creating icy travel that may last through daybreak Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday for Northern Oneida County, including Boonville. Forecasters expect up to 3 inches of snow along with ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch. Localized spots could see as much as one-quarter inch of ice, especially in higher elevations.

Snow will develop Friday morning and may briefly coat Route 12 and Route 28 before mixing with or changing to freezing rain during the afternoon and evening. Even a light glaze can freeze bridges and untreated secondary roads, raising the risk of spinouts during both the morning and evening commutes.

New York State Department of Transportation crews are expected to treat major highways, but drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and allow extra time. Residents should use caution on stairs, sidewalks and driveways where ice can build quickly.

Precipitation tapers late Friday night, but icy patches may linger into early Saturday. Motorists can check 511NY for the latest road conditions before heading out, and additional advisories remain possible if ice totals trend higher.
