Arlington Heights, Illinois – An armed home invasion on North Chestnut Avenue Thursday morning prompted a police perimeter and school lockdowns.

According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, officers responded at 7:33 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, to a reported burglary in progress in the 800 block of North Chestnut Avenue. Authorities said it was quickly determined that an allegedly armed male offender had entered the residence while the homeowners were inside.

Preliminary information indicates the suspect allegedly forced entry into the home occupied by two residents. The homeowners were able to secure themselves inside a bedroom and call 911, police said.

Responding officers conducted what authorities described as a dynamic entry into the home, escorting the residents out safely and unharmed. During the interaction, officers heard the discharge of a firearm from inside the residence. Arlington Heights Fire Department personnel also responded to the scene.

Police established a perimeter and observed the suspect moving inside the home. Authorities said the suspect allegedly did not comply with officers’ commands. The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System was activated to provide additional assistance.

Nearby schools were notified and placed on a soft lockdown as a precaution. The incident remains contained to the single-family residence and the investigation is ongoing.

The morning response may have impacted nearby students and commuters in the area.

Additional updates will be released as they become available.
