Mount Holly, NJ – Roads in Sussex County, New Jersey, and the Pocono region of Pennsylvania could turn icy within hours after 7 p.m. Thursday as freezing rain mixes with light snow ahead of the Friday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday until noon Friday for Sussex County in New Jersey and Carbon and Monroe counties in Pennsylvania. Snow totals will remain light, up to 1 inch, but ice accumulations could reach two-tenths of an inch, enough to glaze untreated roads, bridges and sidewalks.

Communities including Newton, Stroudsburg and Jim Thorpe face the highest risk for slick travel overnight into Friday morning. Ice may form on elevated surfaces first, including overpasses along Interstate 80 and Route 206. Even a thin layer of ice can create hazardous driving conditions, especially during the early commute hours.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time and check 511 for the latest road conditions before heading out. Sidewalks and driveways may also become slippery, increasing the risk of falls.

Temperatures should gradually rise late Friday morning, improving conditions by midday, but slick spots could linger in shaded areas. The advisory remains in effect until noon Friday.
