Rapid City, SD – Slippery roads are developing across the Black Hills and far southwestern South Dakota as light snow continues through late afternoon, creating travel concerns before 5 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. MST for the Central and Southern Black Hills, Southern Foothills and parts of Fall River and Oglala Lakota counties. Additional snow accumulations up to 1 inch are expected.

Communities including Custer, Hill City, Keystone and Hot Springs are seeing light snowfall that may coat highways such as U.S. 16, U.S. 385 and U.S. 18. In southwestern areas including Edgemont, Pine Ridge and Oglala, untreated roads could become slick, especially on bridges and shaded stretches.

While snowfall amounts are relatively light, even a thin layer can create hazardous driving conditions in higher elevations and winding terrain near Mount Rushmore, Pactola Reservoir and Custer State Park. Officials warn that travel could slow during the late afternoon as temperatures hover near freezing.

Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and check South Dakota 511 for real-time road updates. Snow is expected to taper toward early evening, with improving conditions after 5 p.m., though isolated slick spots may linger into tonight.
