Burlington, VT – Drivers across the Adirondacks and eastern Vermont could see roads quickly turn slushy and snow-covered by late Friday morning as heavy, wet snow spreads across the region ahead of the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday for Essex County in New York and Eastern Addison, Eastern Rutland and Western Windsor counties in Vermont. Snow totals will range from 6 to 10 inches, with snowfall rates exceeding 1 inch per hour Friday evening.

In New York, Lake Placid, Ticonderoga, Port Henry and Newcomb will likely see the heaviest bursts during the late afternoon and evening hours. In Vermont, Killington, Ludlow, Bethel and Bristol can expect rapidly deteriorating travel conditions, especially on Routes 4, 7 and 100. The initial snow will be wet and heavy, increasing the risk of isolated power outages where it clings to trees and power lines.

Road crews will treat major highways, but secondary roads may become snow-packed quickly. Officials urge drivers to delay non-essential travel Friday evening, carry emergency supplies and check 511NY or NewEngland511 before departing.

Snow becomes lighter and drier overnight, but slick conditions may linger into Saturday morning. Additional advisories could follow if snowfall bands intensify.
