Pueblo, CO – Travel over Colorado’s highest mountain passes could become nearly impossible by early Friday morning as up to 15 inches of snow and 55 mph wind gusts hammer the Eastern San Juan Mountains.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 11 p.m. Thursday until 11 p.m. Friday for elevations above 10,000 feet, including Wolf Creek Pass and Cumbres Pass. Widespread snowfall totals between 8 and 12 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts reaching 15 inches. Wind gusts could peak at 55 mph, producing blowing and drifting snow.

Conditions will deteriorate rapidly after midnight, with the most intense snowfall likely during the Friday morning commute. Visibility may drop below a quarter mile at times, especially along U.S. Highway 160 near Wolf Creek Pass. Strong crosswinds could create dangerous travel for high-profile vehicles, while drifting snow may block exposed stretches of roadway.

CDOT crews are expected to monitor and treat highways, but chain restrictions or temporary closures are possible if snowfall rates intensify. Drivers should check road conditions by calling 511 before heading into the high country and carry winter survival supplies.

Snow and wind will gradually ease late Friday night, but slick and snow-packed roads may persist into early Saturday.
