Jackson, Kentucky – Wind gusts near 60 mph could sweep across KY-15 and the Hal Rogers Parkway between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday as strong to isolated severe thunderstorms move through eastern Kentucky during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, numerous showers and storms are expected Thursday afternoon and evening, with rain chances between 80% and 90%. Temperatures will surge into the upper 60s and lower 70s ahead of the system, adding fuel for stronger cells capable of damaging winds and brief heavy downpours.
Communities including Hazard, Campton, Prestonsburg and London could see ponding on roadways, especially along KY-80 and US-23 where drainage is poor. Visibility may drop below one mile in heavier showers, and isolated power outages are possible if winds down tree limbs.
Showers taper early Friday morning, with highs still reaching the mid-50s to upper 60s before colder air begins filtering in this weekend. By Saturday night, rain is expected to transition to a rain-snow mix as temperatures fall into the upper 20s to mid-30s. Slick spots could develop late Saturday night into early Sunday along untreated bridges and elevated roadways.
Sunday turns colder with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s and scattered snow showers continuing. By Monday morning, temperatures may dip into the teens across parts of eastern Kentucky.
Residents should secure outdoor items before 3 p.m. Thursday and monitor warnings through the evening. Additional advisories may be issued as colder air settles in this weekend.
