Chicago, Illinois – Wind gusts approaching 40 mph could whip across I-90 and Lake Shore Drive by 6 a.m. Friday, just as a quick burst of snow develops north of I-80, creating slick spots for the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected late Thursday afternoon and evening as a storm system moves through Illinois. Some storms could produce brief heavy downpours, especially near I-294 and I-55 during the evening drive.
Colder air rushes in overnight, setting up a sharp drop in temperatures by daybreak Friday. Forecasters say a narrow band of rain could transition to snow north of I-80, including parts of Cook, DuPage and Lake counties. While accumulation appears light, even a quick coating on bridges and overpasses along I-94 and I-290 could create hazardous travel conditions between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m.
Friday will also turn sharply colder and windy. Northwest winds may gust between 30 and 40 mph, especially near the Lake Michigan shoreline, reducing visibility at times and making travel difficult for high-profile vehicles.
High temperatures will struggle into the upper 30s to low 40s Friday before falling into the 20s by Friday night. Drivers should secure loose outdoor items, allow extra stopping distance and check road conditions before heading out early.
Additional lake-effect snow showers could develop this weekend in northwest Indiana as colder air settles in. Further advisories may be issued if snow bands intensify.
