Fort Worth, Texas – Wind gusts topping 20 mph combined with humidity levels near 15 to 20 percent could spark fast-moving grass fires along I-35W and US-287 through 7 p.m. Thursday, putting drivers and neighborhoods west of the interstate on alert.

According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for Young, Jack, Montague and Cooke counties until 7 p.m. Thursday. Temperatures climbing into the upper 70s and near 80 degrees across North Texas, including the Dallas-Fort Worth area, are drying vegetation rapidly. Areas west of I-35W face the lowest humidity and highest fire spread potential.

Communities near Bowie, Graham and Cisco are especially vulnerable, where gusty southwest winds could push flames across open fields and toward rural roadways. Along I-20, Loop 820 and TX-114, blowing dust and smoke could briefly reduce visibility if fires ignite near highways.

Emergency officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, welding or any activity that could produce sparks. Secure trailer chains, properly dispose of cigarettes and keep vehicles off dry grass. Even a small ignition source can spread quickly under these conditions.

Relief arrives this weekend as two cold fronts move through North Texas. Highs fall into the 60s Saturday and Sunday, with some areas dipping into the 30s by early Sunday morning. Rain chances remain low into early next week.

The Red Flag Warning expires at 7 p.m., but elevated fire danger could persist until winds weaken later Thursday evening.
