California – Waves are already pounding the shoreline, and stiff southwest winds are whipping sand across San Diego beaches this morning, creating dangerous surf and tricky driving conditions before lunchtime.
According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, a High Surf Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. Friday for San Diego County Coastal Areas and Orange County beaches. Surf of 4 to 7 feet is expected, with sets reaching 8 feet in San Diego County. A Wind Advisory is also in effect from 9 a.m. today until 2 a.m. Friday for coastal areas, valleys, and inland communities. Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will gust between 35 and 45 mph.
Beachgoers face hazardous swimming and surfing conditions. Rip currents will strengthen through the day. Minor coastal erosion is possible, especially near west-facing beaches. Stay out of the water if inexperienced, and keep a safe distance from jetties and rocks.
Drivers along Interstate 5 near Del Mar and through coastal Carlsbad may feel sudden crosswinds. High-profile vehicles should use caution, particularly late this afternoon when gusts peak. Secure outdoor furniture and prepare for isolated power outages.
Showers increase today with highs near 59 degrees. Rain chances remain elevated into this evening before skies gradually clear Friday. Sunshine returns Saturday with highs in the mid-60s. Sunday warms further, nearing 69 degrees.
Early next week trends even milder, with highs pushing into the low 70s by Monday and mid-70s possible by Tuesday. Longer-range signals favor above-normal temperatures into late February, bringing early Spring warmth to Southern California.
