Indianapolis, Indiana – Severe weather is expected across central Indiana today, with the highest threat centered near and south of I-70, where damaging winds and isolated tornadoes could form quickly during the afternoon and evening commute. Storm development is likely after 3 p.m., with the strongest cells continuing through 9 p.m., prompting caution for drivers along I-65, I-74, U.S. 31 and U.S. 40.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the area faces a Level 2 (Slight) Risk, with hazards including 60 mph wind gusts, 1-inch hail, and a non-zero tornado potential—particularly for communities from Bloomington to Shelbyville and east toward Greenfield. Visibility may drop sharply inside stronger downpours, and rapid wind shifts could impact high-profile vehicles on elevated interstate stretches.

Once storms move out late this evening, a secondary hazard emerges: strong gradient winds spreading across central Indiana into Friday morning. Gusts are expected to reach 35–40 mph, especially between midnight and noon Friday, raising the chance for scattered power outages and unsecured objects being blown into roadways. Areas north of Indianapolis, including Kokomo and Lafayette, may experience the longest duration of gusty conditions.

Drivers should prepare for fast-changing conditions throughout the afternoon, avoiding travel during peak storm windows when possible. Outdoor items should be secured ahead of the stronger evening winds.

More updates may be issued if storms strengthen beyond current projections or if wind gusts trend closer to 45 mph overnight.
