Springfield, Illinois – A volatile temperature swing and two rounds of thunderstorms will make travel challenging today across central Illinois as strong storms develop southeast of I-55 and track toward the state’s eastern counties. Afternoon highs reaching the lower to mid-60s will fuel storm development, followed by a sharp drop into the 30s and blustery wind chills tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storm coverage will reach 50–80% today, with the best chance for stronger cells developing from late morning through early evening. Damaging wind gusts, hail and a low-end tornado threat remain possible, especially along U.S. 51, U.S. 36 and I-72. Evening storms north of Peoria carry a 40% chance of additional thunder as colder air arrives.

Drivers traveling through Springfield, Decatur, Taylorville and Lincoln should expect rapidly changing conditions, including sudden gusts capable of pushing vehicles on exposed bridges and overpasses. Warm, unstable air will give way quickly to a much colder airmass by Friday morning, when temperatures fall into the upper 20s and lower 30s with wind chills dipping into the teens.

The cooldown deepens through the weekend. Saturday highs will reach the upper 30s to mid-40s, while Sunday brings stiff winds and wind chills between 5° and 15° during the morning hours. Overnight lows Sunday and Monday may fall into the single digits, raising concerns for slick spots where today’s rains linger on untreated surfaces.

Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, keep multiple ways to receive warnings and avoid travel during the strongest bursts of wind. Additional weather statements may be issued as storm tracks sharpen later today.
