Fort Wayne, Indiana – Two rounds of thunderstorms are expected to sweep across northern Indiana Thursday, bringing periods of heavy rain, gusty winds and isolated strong storms capable of producing small hail. Travel along U.S. 30, I-69 and U.S. 24 may be disrupted as the second round strengthens during the late afternoon and evening, when the highest risk for severe weather develops.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, the first line of storms is expected between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., with lightning and brief downpours but a low chance of severe impacts. A more organized cluster is projected to form during the 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. window, mainly affecting central Indiana but capable of drifting north far enough to impact communities along U.S. 30 and stretches of U.S. 6. While the overall threat remains at Level 1, forecasters note that gusts may reach 40–50 mph, which could briefly knock down small branches or blow loose debris across roadways.
Drivers in Fort Wayne, Warsaw and Auburn should stay alert for reduced visibility near I-69 and I-469, where heavy rain pockets may slow traffic during the evening commute. Storm motions could also push thin hail cores into areas south of U.S. 30, particularly where storms merge or bow outward.
Emergency managers recommend having multiple reliable ways to receive warnings and ensuring that weather radios have fresh batteries ahead of the afternoon round. Outdoor activities should be rescheduled, and residents are urged to keep phones charged in case watches or warnings are issued.
Additional updates may be released if storm coverage increases or the evening line intensifies as it moves eastward.
